Chiang Mai is calmer and greener than Bangkok. The moated Old City holds dozens of temples, and the surrounding hills offer waterfalls, hill-tribe villages, and ethical elephant sanctuaries.
The cool, dry season from November to February is ideal. Avoid March and April if you can: agricultural burning often causes serious smoke haze and poor air quality.

Where to stay
Old City
Walkable, full of temples and guesthouses.
Nimman
Modern cafés, restaurants, and co-working.
Riverside
Quieter, with boutique hotels.
Getting around
Walk within the Old City, and use red songthaews (shared trucks), tuk-tuks, or ride-hailing apps for longer trips. Hire a driver for day trips into the mountains.
What it costs
Excellent value. Street food, massages, and guesthouses are cheap, and even boutique hotels cost less than in most capitals.
Good to know
Cover shoulders and knees at temples.
Check air quality forecasts if travelling between February and April.
Choose elephant experiences that do not offer riding or performances.
Travel information changes often. Prices here are rough guides, and transport, opening hours, and
entry requirements can change without notice. Confirm details with official tourism sites,
operators, and your government's travel advice before you book, and travel with suitable
insurance.
